Marijuana is considered as the third most commonly used drug in the world, followed by alcohol and tobacco. The plant contains an active compound called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is primarily responsible for the euphoric feeling (or high). If one intends to accurately understand how long does THC stay in your system, they need to understand how our bodies metabolize the substance.

Smoking is the primary choice of marijuana consumption as far as the general public is concerned. The smoke from the burnt plant is inhaled, causing the THC to enter the blood stream through the lungs. The circulation of the THC infused blood rapidly affects almost every organ of the body. THC can be easily detected after around nine minutes of smoking. As for the question how long is marijuana in your system, a lot of different factors have to be taken into account, which can vary the excretion depending upon various factors such as frequency, long term usage, etc.

THC concentration in the blood generally decreases rapidly after smoking. This is due to its ability to get absorbed into the tissues. However, in the case of chronic users, THC blood levels tend to remain high even after several days of abstinence. Since THC is a fat-soluble and non-polar molecule, it is easily attached to the fatty cells in the body. Studies have indicated that THC is mostly retained within the fat tissues and regular usage might take up to several weeks before it is completely eliminated from the body.

According to the national Drug Court Institute, ten days are the average timeframe for most frequent users to pass the test.
