The effects of smoking marijuana fade quite quickly. However, it can be detected in your system for weeks or even longer. How long THC remains in your blood depends upon how much you smoke, how often you smoke, and how long you have been smoking. The ingredient which is responsible for the high in marijuana is known as Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. Smoking weed can instantly infuse THC into the blood stream through the lungs. However, ingesting the herb can take much longer to get absorbed into the blood, usually depending upon a person’s metabolism rate.

So how long does weed stay in your system? First, let’s examine how different tests are conducted to determine if a person consumes marijuana.

Methods for Testing Marijuana Usage

A person can be tested for marijuana use through various tests. These tests are divided into two main categories, current intoxication and historical use.
Urine tests are conducted to check for historical use along with hair follicle test. These tests target a non-psychoactive substance, THC-COOH, which has nothing to do with a person’s sobriety. THC-COOH is produced when the liver metabolizes THC, which can indicate if a person has consumed the substance.

Blood and saliva tests are conducted to detect the present intoxication of a person. Such tests help determine if a person is currently intoxicated by determining if active THC molecules are present in the blood stream or the saliva.
THC can be detected through the blood stream. However, as mentioned above, blood tests are primarily used to determine if the person is presently intoxicated. This is because THC can be detected in the blood for only a few hours at most, since THC is immediately metabolized into metabolites. These metabolites are then stored into fatty cells and lipids in the body, and are gradually eliminated through urine and faeces.

How Long Does THC Stay in Your System?

Since THC stays in the bloodstream for a relatively short amount of time, blood tests for detecting marijuana usage are rarely used, and when they are used, it’s done to determine the current intoxication of a person. For example, in the case of an automobile accident, authorities would determine the driver’s sobriety through a blood or saliva test. But unlike blood alcohol tests, marijuana blood tests do not indicate the level of a person’s impairment or intoxication.

So if you’re worried about how long does marijuana stay in your system, you should know that THC in your bloodstream is the least of your worries. If your employer intends to determine any drug usage, they would most likely opt for the inexpensive urine test. THC can be eliminated from your system from a week to a month based on your body weight, body fat percentage, frequency of use, and the timeframe of usage.

The most effective way to clean your system of THC is to exercise and drink a lot of water every day. This would ensure that you sweat and urinate a lot throughout the day, causing traces of THC to be flushed out of your system at a faster rate.
