Legalizing Weed: The Weed Business Boom Redefines Notions of “Green” Technology
The burgeoning growth of the legalized marijuana market has created an expected surge in the more obvious marijuana-based businesses out there—weed dispensaries, medical marijuana stocks and industrial hemp investments, and newly specialized medical marijuana doctors.
But “Green” technology—and this is different from, but not exclusive to, the environmentally friendly and sustainable sort of green—is undergoing its own boom. When it comes to how people smoke or bake their buds, or how a cannabis dispensary business and government agencies go about tracking plants and the dollars generated by marijuana sales, new marijuana use devices and quickly evolving marijuana software are on the rise.
As the trend to legalize weed continues, Michigan medical marijuana and California marijuana laws will probably be as demanding and stringent as laws in existing states and counties which have already set a high and, thus far, effective bar for cannabis tracking requirements and regulations, which in some ways is similar to board regulatory procedure and prevention of underage consumption of alcohol.
These same types of regulations that are in place now, governing marijuana dispensaries in Denver, or the Oregon medical marijuana market, feed the demand for simple and yet innovative ways to measure THC content for consumer information and safety; to track cutting edge research and development of new strains; organize patient info and medical marijuana card identification; and assist government agencies that must review and manage dispensary data on every gram of indica or sativa that is sold.
Examples of big software players in the medicinal and recreational marijuana industries are companies such as MJ Freeway, Franwell, and NIC.
Meanwhile, websites like weedhire.com, for cannabis related jobs, and a plethora of marijuana dispensary location, review, and specialty websites have become widespread. Weedmaps.com, for example, allows users to sort through local weed dispensaries and reviews, or search for a particular medical marijuana dispensary known for its elite pot varieties or CBD cannabis strains.
And then there is the more direct-to-cannabis-consumer market. Though time old favourites like joint, pipe, bong and piece of fruit will never go out of style, there is a rise of delightful ganja gadgetry (discrete or ostentatious) hitting markets and bringing consumers to familiar highs in new ways: think of the Starbucks cup stealth bong, or volcano and mobile vaporizer enhancements. The Huffington Post even reports on entrepreneurs intensively working to develop a chewing gum to combat cottonmouth.
Sounds like a Willy Wonka meets legal weed dream!
